Antique Coffee Table

- What to sit glass on, homemade coffee table...?
I plan on buying a piece of cut glass from a hardware store that would be an appropriate size for my living room. Then, I plan to simple prop the glass up with some to make my table (unframed glass coffee table). Question is, what do I sit/prop the glass up with to make my table? A DON'T BUY A PIECE OF CUT GLASS FOR THAT TABLE! use tempered glass. if regular glass breaks it will have very sharp edges. if that break is caused by someone falling then those sharp edges could kill someone. if you buy thicker glass for more strength you have to realize that that stronger glass will be a problem if your falling onto shattered pieces of it. the stronger the glass the deeper into your body it penetrates. tempered glass is heat treated. it's stronger and less likely to break. however, if it ever does break it will shatter into small roundish pieces that will not be a potentially fatal hazard.

- Would acrylic nesting tables be a practical alternative to glass coffee table?
i have a coffee table that is wood with a glass top and i hate how loud it is when i put something on top of it and i'm paranoid to break it. but i really love the look of all acrylic nesting tables in a modern room and am debating about purchasing them, but i wonder if i and my clumsy guest friends would be too scared to use them. the acrylic things that i own are not furniture but they are pretty indestructible. opinions? insight?

A Acrylic is softer than glass so will produce a less brittle sound when stuff hits it. On the other hand, coasters and place mats were (at least partly) invented to deal with clunking and clanking. Of course, being softer, it is more likely to show scratches.
