Antique Coffee Table
Many centures ago, the first coffee tables came from the Middle Eastern countries designed for serving up coffees, teas and the favorite beverages of the royale. They were first designed as smaller round tables topped with brass. When the coffee table came to America sometime during the 19th century they were designed as room center pieces for social gatherings. By this time they were long and lower than the first coffee tables.
Through the years man shapes and sizes have come to encompass these antique coffee tables. As accent pieces to any room, they can be placed behind the sofa, at the ends of the furniture or in the center of the room.
An antique coffee table which is very small will appear out of place if it is paired with larger furniture or a large room. When including this type of table consider how the room is designed and the way the table would fit with the other furniture, chairs and accented tables.
Other than this, choose from a coffee table collection that meets its functional demand, such as how will it be used? As a decorative piece, displaying books or plants or will it feature a glass top for displaying collectibles.
Some antique coffee tables can cost about $2,000 - even for reproductions. One table handmade by James Dew and Sons features cabriole legs and scalloped apron. Comes in either cherry or maple woods and is considered a Bosten tea table which is relatively tall for a serving table.
Chinese antique coffee tables are lower to the ground. If your furniture is smaller or lower to the ground these make great additions to your living room. Many are adorned with colorful paintings like pink peonies, green leaves and backgrounds. You can find these priced nicely at around $500 in mint condition.
If you prefer something more modern, a contemporary antique coffee table is relatively inexpensive. Made from all over the world, England, US they come in many sizes, heights and color tones. Most popular ones are found in white, orange, reds, blacks and yellowish brown with high gloss finishes. Add a touch of chrome for that modern finish.
When looking for that antique coffee table, remember it will become a centerpiece and provide longevity which means it will last for years.

I would like a vintage coffee table for my new living room. It would be great if it had rounded edges and nice details... but anything is better than nothing. Also, not too expensive!
A It may take a little time and searching if you want to get a really good buy. Look for an estate auction in your area. They are usually advertised in the newspaper. Check your yellow pages for auctioneers and find out about any upcoming auctions. They can be good sources of antique furniture for a reasonable price. You can sometimes get surprising finds at goodwill stores and other second hand stores, so don't rule them out. I have found a couple of really good buys at second hand stores. Yard sales, moving sales, garage sales are all worth investigating. I have three pieces of antique furniture that came from yard sales. If you don't mind how much you pay for it, go the antique store route, but be prepared to pay more. E-bay might be a possibility, though I have never looked for antiques on e-bay and you would need to be very careful. There is also the option of antique reproduction furniture - not my choice, but you may be happy with it. I hope these thoughts help. Here is a good link. Have fun finding just the right table! Best of luck with it.
How do I clean an antique wooden coffee table? Its kind of dirty / dusty and the finish needs polishing to make it shiny again. Thanks for any help.
A I would use the Murphy's Oil Soap to clean the piece, then good furniture polish such as Guardsman or Old English to bring the finish back.
